Redesigning the educator landing page so teachers can see who needs attention first

Context

Beacon is an AI-powered K-12 math tutoring platform. Educators managing anywhere from a handful to hundreds of students needed a fast way to see who needed help right now, without digging through individual student records one at a time.

The problem

The educator experience had two tabs. We were adding a third, a roster-style workspace that would also become the new landing page, the first thing every teacher sees when they log in. Workspaces has to help a teacher work more efficiently, whether they have 15 students or 300.

Process

I owned this end to end, writing the spec, prototyping in Figma Make and Claude Code, and validating with teachers directly rather than working from assumption. The core design questions were which data points actually help a teacher triage quickly, and how much filtering and sorting power to expose without overwhelming a non-technical user managing a large roster.

What migrated

A sortable, filterable roster table with an at-a-glance assignment-progress indicator per student, and a clear path into a deeper Insights view for any student who needed a closer look.
